Who We Are

Making Giving Go Further...Since 1915

One of the first community foundations in the world, The Minneapolis Foundation brings together people, ideas, and resources to improve the lives of all people. It’s a 100-year-old tradition — and we have big plans for the future.

The Foundation sparks positive change in the community in two ways: we administer more than 1,200 charitable funds that enable individuals, families, and businesses to support causes they are passionate about, and we steward and invest gifts that have been entrusted to The Foundation to create a greater Minneapolis that’s vibrant, inclusive, and ready to compete.

Last year, The Foundation and our donors invested more than $80 million in programs and services that change lives and strengthen community.

The majority of our work is focused in these six areas:

Arts & Culture

Arts & Culture

We are committed to sustaining our robust and diverse arts community. That commitment is reflected in the ranking of The Minneapolis Foundation as one of the largest funders of the arts in Minnesota.

Economic Vitality

Economic Vitality

We are working toward building an inclusive workforce, reflective of our changing demographics, as well as a business climate that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and self-sufficiency. Creating stable, well-paying jobs is critical to the long-term vitality of our economy.

Education

Education

We believe that children are our future. That’s why we are investing in systems and programs that put all children on track to compete in a global economy, participate in civic life and pursue their dreams.

Community Health

Community Health

We are committed to building a healthy community where all people have access to critical necessities including excellent medical care, social services, stable housing and livable wages.

Environment & Conservation

Environment & Conservation

Preserving our city’s rich river history and reducing our carbon footprint are two cornerstones of our community’s future. That’s why, on a monthly basis, The Foundation invests a quarter of a million dollars to support environmental causes.

What We Do

Support the dreams of generous Minnesotans

The Minneapolis Foundation helps donors turn their passion into action. We manage charitable assets using investment strategies that are tailored to our donors’ financial needs, philanthropic priorities and passionate interests. Our expertise in philanthropic planning and in-depth knowledge of community issues and nonprofits helps make our donors’ giving go further. Each year, our donors support more than 1000 different causes and charities in Minneapolis and beyond. Learn more about our first-class donor services.

Pursue a vision for our community

We are working to build OneMinneapolis: A thriving community where racial, social, and economic equity is a reality for everyone who lives here. Each year, using funds that have been entrusted to The Foundation over the past century, we distribute $5-7 million in Community Impact grants to spark transformational change in three strategic areas: education, civic engagement, and economic vitality.

We seek to reduce the need for social services by transforming systems and policies to empower more residents to be self-sufficient. By reforming systems such as pre-K-12 education and workforce development, we can advance proven solutions that enable families to interrupt cycles of intergenerational poverty. By eliminating barriers to voting and enfranchisement, we’ll have more people influencing issues that directly affect their lives. By creating change at the systems level – versus supporting programs that serve individuals – the impact will be sustainable.

What is a Community Foundation?

A community foundation is a nonprofit that connects people, ideas and resources to improve the lives of everyone in the community.

Community foundations:

  • Provide guidance and advice to individuals, families and companies to determine the best use of those funds to meet community needs
  • Offer leadership on pervasive community issues through advocacy and funding support
  • Assist donors in identifying and attaining their philanthropic goals locally, nationally and internationally
  • Facilitate multigenerational philanthropy
